Sheffield Business School at Sheffield Hallam University welcomes the world to the 2015 International Adventure Conference of the Adventure Tourism Research Association (ATRA). This 2015 event will be the 4th International Adventure Conference and it is unquestionably the most significant annual event in the field of adventure. It consistently attracts an international delegation of leading academic researchers and industry professionals who carry out cutting edge adventure research and who work in the adventure tourism and adventure recreation industries.
The conference is being held in Sheffield, the UK's greenest city. It is the only city with a national park within its city boundary, a third of the city lies in the Peak District National Park, with the city centre just five miles from the Peak District.
Sheffield is also regarded as the 'Climbing Capital' of the UK with access to grit stone climbing and bouldering in the Peak District and a plethora of climbing walls.
The people of Sheffield embrace the outdoors, enjoying activities such as climbing, cycling, mountain biking, walking and running. Research by the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University shows that Sheffield's household spending on outdoor equipment is the highest in the UK. 66% of the city's population take part in outdoor activities, more than 6% above the national average.
Sheffield was host to the Grand Depart in 2014, with Stage 2 of the event finishing in the city centre. Thousands of people lined the route to welcome the cyclists and the legacy lives on with a "Tour de Yorkshire" planned for May 2015.
The Peak District offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities, with fell running, climbing, walking, cross-country and downhill mountain biking all being popular.
The many, diverse and enduring relationships developed during the first two adventure conferences in Scotland led directly to the creation of the Adventure Tourism Research Association. ATRA is an organisation which seeks to bring together academics, independent researchers, adventure professionals and commercial adventure operators. With a broad, worldwide network, it will soon launch its own peer-reviewed academic journal on adventure tourism. The fee for the 2015 conference will include a year's membership of ATRA.
